Parallels Desktop 12 is the annual upgrade to the virtual machine software that lets you run Windows apps directly on OS X as if they were native. Related: Alternative ways to run Windows on your Mac. While Parallels 11 was an essential upgrade for many, bringing Coherence support to Windows 10 , Parallels 12 is much more of a modest update.

It has some neat new power-management features, a new set of utilities with Parallels Tools, and faster graphics support for gaming. As with previous versions of Parallels, the first job is to install an operating system into a virtual machine. That most likely means Windows, although Ubuntu, Chromium, Android, CentOS, Debian and Fedora are also supported, with Parallels able to download and automatically install these operating systems in the background.

The first option sounds attractive and is easy to do: you install an app on your PC, then let it synchronise your Windows 10 installation to Parallels over your home network. You can even choose to copy your user files from Windows to your Mac. You can transfer your old Windows 10 PC directly to Parallels, but you may need to change settings to get all your apps working But there are caveats.

In other words, you can only transfer an old PC if you bought a retail version of Windows. UAC settings can stop Windows apps from opening Installing Windows 10 from scratch automatically fixes all of the permissions you need. For photo editing, specialist applications in my case astronomy and science software and retrogaming, this is a perfect solution. Installation was quick and painless. Desktop performance is perfect, you would think you were using a PC; no lag or stutters, unlike the older versions which sometimes had problems under heavy load.

UI scaling is much better than previously, Win10 now looks fine, no crazy-small icons and fonts. In terms of crashes I’ve had a few, usually when Windows was attempting to access an obscure bit of hardware through a decades-old program. I got them all working in the end though. Overall I would say this is a great product, certainly the best of the bunch for those who want full Win10 compatibility. Should just be a digital download.

If you look carefully at the download URL, this will download v11, not 12! Downloaded to overwrite existing Parallels Desktop 11 standard which it did. Opened up and it still had my old code and still showed v Did that and it registered it was a pro licence.

And that was it. Independently I clicked on the Updates link and it downloaded a v12 file. Now, not sure if the Parallels site is so clever to detect that I had v11 already install and decided to download it again or they have messed up their.

Either way, very poor user experience. If not, it’s getting binned. It also comes with Parallels toolbox for free too additional 24Mb download.

Some nice tools in this screen record, screen capture, screen lock, record audio, etc. Coherence seems a bit more stable found I lost the start menu at times in v Case in point: Excel – I practically needed a magnifying glass before but that looks nice and ‘normal’ now. Fits the screen well, visible.

No jaggy edges. Much better use of Retina screen. Maybe the premium is a team with a better attitude or something?!? Office is usable. I ended up getting the Mac version as the Windows apps just didn’t resize well regardless of what I did in v However, looks fine without me tweaking any settings. Thumbs up! Download and install is poor though. Compared to the other options I have tried this one is the first that feels like an ‘apple’ solution.

Clean, great UI, and just runs smoothly. I plan on purchasing after my trial. What is that for? It says I can run Windows and hense its apps. The instrallation was easy, but the apps that I installed did not work. They show that they do but there is no actual result. For instance, I used GoPro Fusion Studio app, and it opened the applicaiton but the videos thumnails are all black.

So al the stitches videos are just black color. I also tried other apps related to linguistic corpora that are identical to what I have on my authentic Windows PC. And, again, the Parallels shows you that the app is running but when you output the result, everything is empty.
